Cleveland Browns linebacker Carson Schwesinger has been named the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year for the 2025 season. The prestigious announcement was made on Thursday night at NFL Honors.
Schwesinger received 40 out of 50 first-place votes for the award, solidifying his impressive rookie campaign.
Award Details and Voting Breakdown
Schwesinger, a second-round draft pick from UCLA, secured the award over several other notable nominees. Seahawks defensive back Nick Emmanwori finished second in voting with 199 total points and seven first-place votes.
Other strong contenders included Falcons defensive end James Pearce Jr., who received 173 points and two first-place votes, and Falcons safety Xavier Watts, with 102 points and one first-place vote. Giants edge rusher Abdul Carter also garnered attention with 72 points.
Outstanding 2025 Season Performance
Throughout the 2025 season, Schwesinger showcased exceptional talent and consistency. He led all rookies in combined tackles with an impressive 146 and also topped the rookie charts in tackles for loss with 11.
His impactful performance also included 2.5 sacks, nine quarterback hits, two interceptions, and three passes defended. He was tied for second among rookies in interceptions. Schwesinger recorded double-digit tackles in seven games, notably including a remarkable streak of six consecutive games. His 146 tackles placed him among the top five all-time for rookie tackle seasons.

As a rookie, Schwesinger quickly became an indispensable part of the Cleveland Browns defense, serving as the signal caller responsible for calling plays in the huddle. Despite battling an ankle injury during the season, he demonstrated remarkable durability by playing in 16 of 17 regular season games.
