"Temporal Portal" Mural Unveiled at Yale Peabody Museum
Evolutionary Journey Depicted in New Central Gallery Installation
A new mural, "Temporal Portal," has been installed in the Central Gallery of the Yale Peabody Museum.
The mural depicts millions of years of plant and animal evolution within a cave scene.
It features ancient species like the trilobite and calamites, an extinct horsetail genus, in dark hues in the foreground. Existing species, such as the elm tree, are shown in lighter green further back.
The installation also includes imaginary future plant and animal species, painted in dotted outlines. These elements were contributed by Peabody staff and New Haven residents during a Community Day event at the museum.
Community and Academic Roots of "Temporal Portal"
"Temporal Portal" resulted from the Yale College fall semester course "Cave Paintings to Graffiti," instructed by Kymberly Pinder, Dean of the Yale School of Art. The course examined mural painting history, from ancient Lascaux cave paintings to modern graffiti, addressing themes of accessibility and ownership in public art.
