US Approves $5.88 Billion for Global HIV Response

The United States has approved a $5.88 billion spending package for the global response to HIV. This significant investment aims to bolster international efforts against the virus, providing critical resources where they are most needed.

This investment aims to provide lifesaving support to millions in partner countries and contribute to an efficient, data-driven, and results-oriented global HIV response.

Winnie Byanyima, Executive Director of UNAIDS, expressed gratitude for the continued commitment of President Donald Trump and the US Congress to HIV and global health. Her statement highlights the ongoing partnership and dedication from the US government.

Fund Allocation

A total of $5.88 billion has been meticulously allocated across key initiatives to combat HIV globally:

  • $4.6 billion is designated for bilateral HIV support through the America First Global Health Strategy.
  • $1.25 billion is channeled to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria.
  • $45 million is allocated directly to UNAIDS.

Strategy Objectives

This legislation significantly advances the America First Global Health Strategy, focusing on several critical goals.

Key objectives include achieving UNAIDS' 95-95-95 targets as an integral part of ending AIDS as a public health threat by 2030. Furthermore, the strategy aims to accelerate a strategic shift towards country ownership and self-reliant HIV responses, empowering nations to manage their own health initiatives effectively.

UNAIDS Role

The Joint UN Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) plays a crucial coordinating role, marshalling the efforts of 11 UN organizations—including UNICEF, WFP, and WHO—towards the ambitious goal of ending AIDS by 2030.

The US Government has been a key partner of UNAIDS since its inception in 1996 and has further solidified this alliance by extending its membership in the UNAIDS Programme Coordinating Board until 2028.

UNAIDS is committed to utilizing this funding to provide data and technical and strategic support to countries and communities most affected by HIV. This support will assist in the implementation of the America First Global Health Strategy, fostering collaboration with the US Government, the Global Fund, and other partner entities.
