Datsun 280Z Elevates Performance with Mercedes V12 and New Headers
Michael Tung has documented a Datsun 280Z featuring a Mercedes-Benz M120 V12 engine swap. This custom vehicle recently achieved a significant milestone with the installation of equal-length headers.
The Storied M120 Engine
The 6.0-liter M120 engine served as the foundation for AMG-tuned engines utilized in the Pagani Zonda and also powered the one-off Isdera Commendatore 112i. Initially introduced in the 1990s, the M120 was found in W140-series Mercedes-Benz sedans and coupes, as well as the R129 SL600.
A Journey of V12 Power
This specific Datsun 280Z is equipped with its second M120 engine. The initial engine swap, performed around six years ago for a hill climb event, resulted in the first engine overheating. After the second engine was installed, the primary goal was to make the car operational, with subsequent work planned over time. The new exhaust system is noted as a substantial upgrade for the vehicle.
While the V12 engine is a tight fit, its aluminum block means it does not significantly exceed the weight of the original iron-block L-Series inline-six, which helps preserve weight distribution.
Performance Specifications
The engine, rated at approximately 400 horsepower in its unmodified W140 S-Class form, is coupled with a Tremec T56 Magnum six-speed manual transmission.
