India and Malaysia Affirm Deepening Economic and Security Partnership
India and Malaysia have affirmed a commitment to strengthen economic and security ties following a bilateral meeting between Prime Minister Modi and Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
Both leaders issued a strong condemnation of cross-border terrorism, emphasizing a clear stance against it with no tolerance for double standards or compromise.
The visit resulted in approximately twelve agreements and announcements for cooperation across various sectors.
A Broad Spectrum of Cooperation
These agreements encompass defense and security, semiconductor technology, social security provisions for Indian workers, UN peacekeeping operations, disaster management, and anti-corruption efforts.
Unwavering Stance Against Terrorism
Notably, the joint statement explicitly mentioned "cross-border terror," aligning with India's concerns regarding terrorism originating from across its borders. The statement also reinforced a commitment to enhance bilateral and multilateral cooperation in countering terrorism, radicalization, and violent extremism, including within international forums like the United Nations and the Financial Action Task Force (FATF).
PM Modi acknowledged PM Ibrahim's condemnation of recent terror attacks in Pahalgam and at the Red Fort.
Bolstering Security and Defense Ties
PM Modi indicated that security cooperation would be boosted through intelligence sharing, counter-terrorism initiatives, and maritime security efforts, alongside expanded defense collaboration.
The joint statement also acknowledged the robust defense relationship between the two nations, evidenced by regular exchanges, visits, staff talks, exercises, training programs, and collaboration in the defense industry. India is reportedly considering the sale of Dornier aircraft and the supply of naval platforms from Indian shipyards to Malaysia. Furthermore, the leaders encouraged increased maritime cooperation, including routine goodwill and operational deployments.
Economic Transformation and Global Reforms
During their discussions, both leaders underscored the importance of their growing friendship amid global uncertainties. They expressed support for peace initiatives and agreed on the necessity of reforming global institutions to effectively address contemporary challenges.
Both Prime Ministers participated in a CEO Forum, which is expected to create new opportunities for trade and investment. PM Modi highlighted plans to advance partnerships in areas such as Artificial Intelligence, digital technologies, semiconductors, health, and food security. He articulated a vision for economic transformation guided by strategic trust.
Extradition Request for Zakir Naik
While not officially confirmed as a discussion point, India continues to engage with Malaysia regarding the extradition request for Zakir Naik to address related legal matters.
