Shadow AG Wallace Dismisses Ley Leadership Challenge Rumours
Shadow attorney-general Andrew Wallace has dismissed ongoing speculation regarding a leadership challenge to Opposition Leader Sussan Ley.
The reported challenge, allegedly from right-wing aspirant Angus Taylor, was characterized by Wallace as "hypothetical," "rumour," and "innuendo."
Speaking at Parliament House, Wallace stated there is currently no challenge, and he is focused on his responsibilities as shadow attorney-general. He affirmed his support for Ley, emphasizing her position as the Liberal Party's first woman leader.
Wallace suggested that a move to depose her could lead to accusations of politically assassinating the first female leader of the Liberal Party.
He described Ley's performance as "a good job in very difficult circumstances." Wallace did not criticize Senator Jane Hume for earlier comments suggesting the party was being led astray. Instead, he highlighted the party's tradition of allowing members to express concerns and speak freely, even permitting backbenchers to cross the floor.
Wallace also conveyed his backing for Ley's leadership in an earlier interview with Sky News, advocating for her to have a clear opportunity to lead the party.
