Two Fatal Crashes on Mitchell Freeway Claim Three Lives
Authorities are investigating two separate fatal incidents on the Mitchell Freeway in Perth that occurred on the same day, resulting in the deaths of three individuals.
Incident 1: Fatal Single-Vehicle Rollover Near Glendalough
An 18-year-old male driver died following a single-vehicle crash on the Mitchell Freeway northbound near Glendalough.
The driver, who was the sole occupant of a white Nissan Patrol station sedan, lost control of the vehicle near the Powis Street exit. The vehicle rolled, and the driver sustained critical injuries. He was transported to Royal Perth Hospital, where he later died.
As a result of the crash, northbound lanes from Vincent Street to Hutton Street were closed, causing heavy traffic delays extending back to Hay Street. Motorists were directed to exit the freeway.
Major crash officers are investigating the incident. Authorities are appealing for witnesses or anyone with dash-cam or mobile phone footage to contact Crime Stoppers at 1800 333 000 or upload footage via the official portal.
Incident 2: Fatal Wrong-Way Collision in Butler
A 56-year-old woman and a 24-year-old man died following a head-on collision on the Mitchell Freeway in Butler, a northern Perth suburb.
The incident occurred around 11:25 PM near the Lukin Drive exit. Police reported that the 24-year-old man was driving a white utility southbound against the flow of traffic when it collided with two hatchbacks. The woman, who was driving one of the hatchbacks, was pronounced deceased at the scene. The man was transported to Joondalup Health Campus with critical injuries and later died.
Two occupants in the second hatchback sustained injuries that were not life-threatening. Portions of the Mitchell Freeway were closed for several hours to facilitate investigation and clearing operations.
Major crash investigators are examining the scene and have requested that anyone with relevant footage or information contact Crime Stoppers.
Prior Incident
This wrong-way collision marks the second fatal head-on crash on this section of the Mitchell Freeway since its opening in 2023. In October, Johnny Gray, 60, died after driving his vehicle the wrong way down an off-ramp at the Romeo Road terminus of the freeway.
