Wellington Photography Duo Retires After Two Decades with Dubbo Photo News

Wellington residents Colin and Laurie Rouse, a professional photography team, are retiring after more than 20 years of association with Dubbo Photo News. The couple is stepping back from their careers to prioritize their health and spend more time with their five adult children and ten grandchildren, most of whom reside in the region.

Colin, 70, and Laurie, 66, founded a successful photography and videography business in Dubbo decades ago. Colin developed a passion for photography at age 19 and was known as a prominent photographer in the area, supporting his family through his craft. Laurie managed the business's administrative aspects.

Navigating the Digital Shift

The new millennium brought significant changes to their business due to advancements in photographic technology and the rise of the digital age. They invested substantially, including a a $250,000 digital processing machine, to adapt to these changes, becoming early adopters of digital printing capabilities west of the Blue Mountains.

However, the emergence of low-cost photo processing from large chain stores eventually impacted their business viability, leading to its closure. Following this, Colin transitioned into videography, specializing in filming and photographing eisteddfods, often capturing tens of thousands of images at single events.

A Long Association with Dubbo Photo News

Their long-standing association with Dubbo Photo News began in 2004 when they moved into the publication's premises. Colin provided social photos for publication, a commercial arrangement that continued until their recent retirement.

Eleven years ago, the couple relocated to Wellington, where they continued to supply photos from the area to Dubbo Photo News and delivered copies to local outlets.

Embracing Retirement

Their decision to retire was influenced by ongoing health challenges and the evolving photography and videography landscape, where smartphone technology has made photography widely accessible. In retirement, Colin and Laurie plan to pursue social photography, and Colin may continue his involvement with eisteddfods.

Dubbo Photo News acknowledged their contributions to the publication and the Wellington community, dedicating this week's front page to them.
