Chappell Roan Departs Wasserman Agency Amid CEO's Email Controversy
Pop artist Chappell Roan announced Monday that she is no longer represented by the Wasserman talent agency, led by Casey Wasserman. Her decision follows public attention on Wasserman's 2003 email exchanges with convicted sex trafficker Ghislaine Maxwell, which were part of documents released by the U.S. Justice Department.
Chappell Roan's Statement on Agency Departure
On Monday, Chappell Roan issued a statement on Instagram regarding her decision:
"As of today, I am no longer represented by Wasserman, the talent agency led by Casey Wasserman. Artists deserve representation that aligns with their values and supports their safety and dignity. This decision reflects my belief that meaningful change in our industry requires accountability and leadership that earns trust."
Casey Wasserman's Communications Under Scrutiny
Casey Wasserman, a prominent sports and entertainment executive and head of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics, has been subject to public discussion regarding email exchanges with Ghislaine Maxwell dating from 2003. These personal emails were among files related to the late financier and sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, Maxwell's former boyfriend, which were published by the U.S. Department of Justice last month. At the time of these exchanges, Mr. Wasserman was married.
Mr. Wasserman has apologized for his past communications with Maxwell. He stated that the association occurred before her or Epstein’s crimes were publicly revealed. He denies having a personal or business relationship with Epstein.
The Wasserman talent agency did not provide immediate comment on Roan's announcement.
Background on Ghislaine Maxwell and Jeffrey Epstein
Ghislaine Maxwell is currently serving a 20-year prison sentence. She was convicted in 2021 by a New York jury on charges including sex trafficking of a minor. Federal prosecutors accused Maxwell in 2020 of recruiting and grooming girls for sexual encounters with Epstein between 1994 and 2004.
Jeffrey Epstein, a financier and sex offender, died in 2019 in a Manhattan jail cell, with his death officially ruled a suicide. He pleaded guilty in 2008 to prostitution charges, including soliciting an underage girl. The Justice Department's release of numerous documents related to Epstein has revealed connections to various individuals.
