WhatsApp Web Rolls Out One-on-One Voice and Video Calling to Beta Users
WhatsApp has initiated the rollout of one-on-one voice and video calling functionality for its web application, initially to users enrolled in its beta program. This significant development expands the platform's communication features, enabling real-time audio and visual calls directly through a web browser, a capability previously exclusive to dedicated desktop applications.
Current Rollout and Availability
The new calling features are being progressively released for individual chats within the WhatsApp Web interface. Users who are part of the beta program can now access and initiate voice and video calls directly from a chat window by clicking a dedicated call button.
A broader release for all WhatsApp Web users is anticipated in the coming weeks.
To gain early access to new features, users can join the WhatsApp Web beta program. To enroll, navigate to Settings > Help and Feedback and activate the "Join the Beta" switch. While enrollment grants early access, immediate availability of features is not guaranteed.
Key Features and Functionality
The newly introduced calling capabilities include several features designed to enhance user experience and ensure security.
All voice and video calls are end-to-end encrypted, utilizing Signal's protocol to ensure robust privacy and security.
Other key functionalities include:
- Screen Share: Video calls now support a screen sharing feature, allowing users to share their desktop view with the other participant.
- Platform Compatibility: The functionality is supported across various desktop platforms, including Linux, which currently does not have an official WhatsApp desktop application.
Future Developments
While one-on-one calls are now rolling out, group voice and video calling capabilities for WhatsApp Web remain under development. When launched, group calls are projected to support up to 32 participants and will include additional features such as call links and scheduled calls. An estimated time of arrival for group calling has not yet been announced.
