Sri Lanka Intensifies Nipah Virus Precautions Amid Tourist Surge

Sri Lanka's health authorities have intensified precautionary measures in response to reported Nipah virus cases in India and Bangladesh. This crucial announcement was made by Cabinet spokesperson and Health Minister Nalinda Jayatissa.

The Health Ministry has activated preventive protocols at airports and other entry points, strengthening monitoring mechanisms to reduce the risk of potential virus transmission through inbound travel.

The activation of these preventive protocols at airports and other entry points is a direct response to a steady increase in tourist arrivals. These strengthened monitoring mechanisms are designed to mitigate the risk of potential virus transmission from inbound travelers.

The health sector has been diligently tracking developments related to the Nipah virus, especially following confirmed cases and fatalities reported in India. Authorities emphasize their readiness to respond promptly, a preparedness heightened by the anticipated arrival of foreign visitors for major international sporting events scheduled in Colombo.

This heightened vigilance is significantly underpinned by recent tourism figures. Over 40,000 tourist arrivals were recorded in just the past four days, contributing to a total of 277,000 visitors in January — marking the highest arrivals for that month.

Given these factors, the Ministry of Health maintains a high state of alert and comprehensive preventive measures across all entry points to safeguard public health and ensure the safety of both residents and visitors.
