Russia and Ukraine conducted overnight strikes against each other, resulting in casualties and infrastructure damage. These incidents occurred as discussions surrounding a US-proposed peace plan continued.
Strikes in Ukraine
Kyiv experienced a large-scale overnight Russian drone strike. Officials reported at least two fatalities and six injuries. A high-rise residential apartment building in the Dniprovskyi district caught fire, leading to the evacuation of residents. Emergency services rescued 18 individuals, including three children.
Another high-rise apartment in Kyiv's Pechersk district was also affected, sustaining damage to upper floors; the fire was extinguished after residents were evacuated. Air defense units were active across Kyiv as explosions were reported, and residents were advised to seek shelter.
Ukraine's Ministry of Energy confirmed a combined attack on the country's energy infrastructure facilities. Assessment of consequences and restoration efforts are scheduled to commence once security conditions permit.
Strikes in Russia
In Russia's Rostov region, officials reported that a Ukrainian strike resulted in three fatalities. Initially, one death was reported, with two additional individuals succumbing to their injuries in the hospital. Ten other people were injured in the strikes. Damage was also reported in the city of Taganrog.
Governor Veniamin Kondratyev of the southern Krasnodar region described the overnight bombardment as a sustained and significant attack.
Peace Plan Discussions
The overnight strikes occurred amidst ongoing diplomatic discussions. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had previously welcomed proposed changes to a 28-point US peace plan aimed at ending the conflict. He stated that "many correct elements have been incorporated into this framework," indicating potential progress towards a resolution.
However, a Kremlin official characterized the amendments as "completely unconstructive." In the United States, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt communicated that former President Donald Trump expressed hope and optimism regarding the development of a viable peace plan.
